You have a diagnosis, what's next?

Your child has received a diagnosis of autistic disorder, PDD-NOS, or Asperger Syndrome. You may feel overwhelmed by emotions but know you must make informed choices that will offer your child their greatest chance to maximize their potential.

  • » What are your next steps?
  • » How do you approach the school district and regional center?
  • » What treatments or therapies should you consider?
  • » How do you find high quality professional help?
  • » How do you become an effective advocate for your child?
  • » What can you do to start helping your child now?

In 1995, there was virtually no information here in the U.S. about it other than a few scholarly articles. The articles, which remain important to this day, did not give any guidance or direction for families with children with an AS diagnosis. The professionals that diagnosed my son asked me, "What do you want to do now?" My thought was, "How am I suppose to know, you are the professionals, you tell me!" In that same year, I co-founded and formed a parent support group in Sacramento with a handful of parents who had just received the same diagnoses for their children. Today, 14 years later, I am still actively involved in the autism spectrum community and have mentored and provided consultations to hundreds of families with young through adult children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, which includes Autistic Disorder, PDD-NOS and Asperger Syndrome.
